Professor Emiliano Biasini

Associate Professor of Biochemistry, University of Trento (Italy)

Professor Emiliano Biasini is an Associate Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Trento (Italy), where he leads the Dulbecco Telethon Laboratory of Prions & Amyloids at the Department of Cellular, Computational and Integrative Biology (CIBIO). His research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of protein misfolding and aggregation, with particular emphasis on prion diseases and related neurodegenerative disorders.

Professor Biasini obtained his degree in Biological Sciences with highest honours from the University of Roma Tre, followed by specializations in Applied Genetics and Pharmacological Research. He has held research positions in leading international institutions, including Washington University in St. Louis and Boston University School of Medicine.

He is deeply committed to education and mentorship, teaching biochemistry and macromolecular technologies at the University of Trento, where his courses consistently receive outstanding student evaluations. He also plays an active institutional role in fostering innovation and technology transfer, serving as Department Delegate for Startups and a member of the School of Innovation Steering Committee.

Professor Biasini’s work bridges fundamental biology and translational science, aiming to identify novel therapeutic strategies targeting protein folding intermediates and pathological conformations. His contributions have advanced the understanding of prion structure, replication, and toxicity, and have opened new avenues for drug discovery based on targeted protein degradation and modulation of protein homeostasis. He has authored numerous high-impact publications in leading journals, including EMBO Journal, Nature Communications, and PLoS Pathogens.

Professor Biasini has secured competitive funding from major national and international agencies, including the Telethon Foundation, the European Space Agency, and the European Commission. His projects span from basic research to space-based biotechnological experiments, reflecting a strong interdisciplinary approach.

In addition to his academic role, Professor Biasini is actively involved in biotechnology innovation. He is Co-Founder and Scientific Advisor of Sibylla Biotech and Brightmol Biotech, companies developing next-generation therapeutics based on protein degradation technologies. He also serves as Scientific Advisor to patient organizations, including the Association of Families with Fatal Familial Insomnia (AFIFF), and contributes to international initiatives of the CJD International Support Alliance (CJDISA) as a member of the Friends and Advisory Group.
