Professor Neil Mabbott

Professor of Immunopathology and Head of the Immunology Division at the Roslin Institute and Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, University of Edinburgh

Neil first studied for a B.Sc. (hons) in microbiology at the University of Leeds and then moved to the University of Aberdeen were he completed his Ph.D. research. Neil then moved to Edinburgh where he is now Professor of Immunopathology and Head of the Immunology Division at the Roslin Institute and Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, University of Edinburgh.

Neil has been studying the pathogenesis of prion diseases for almost 30 years throughout is post-doctoral career. As an immunologist, his research is aimed at determining how prions interact with our immune systems, as well as the impact that factors such as aging or inflammation can have on prion disease susceptibility. If we can understand how prions manipulate or are able to escape the protective actions of our immune systems to cause infection, we may eventually be able to design novel treatments.
