Dr Andrew Chancellor BHB, MBChB, MD, FRACP, FRCP
Dr Chancellor is a graduate of Auckland University Medical School and trained in Internal Medicine and Neurology at Auckland Hospitals, completing advanced training in Neurology (FRACP) in 1990. Post graduate experience at The Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and Department of Clinical Neurosciences Western General Hospital, Edinburgh 1989-1993, (at the height of the BSE/‘mad-cow’ epidemic) when an interest in CJD developed and again as a locum neurologist in Edinburgh 2003-4 – during the UK’s variant CJD outbreak. He gained a Doctorate (MD, University of Auckland), for research on aspects of motor neuron disease.
Dr Chancellor commenced work as a full time Consultant Neurologist Bay of Plenty District Health Board in 1994 and a private practice in 1995. He has diverse interests in clinical neurology with many publications in peer reviewed journals. Dr Chancellor is a long-serving member of the editorial board of ‘Practical Neurology’ (British Medical Journals Press). He was awarded fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians (London) in 2004.
Dr Chancellor is a member of the Neurological Association of NZ; Australian and NZ Association of Neurologists; and Association of British Neurologists. He was the convener and faculty member of an annual teaching course in neurology for FRACP candidates, presented in Tauranga, since 1996, now a participating tutor.
Dr Chancellor is a senior lecturer at the University of Auckland Medical School Tauranga campus and is an examiner for the FRACP. He has contributed to the NZCJD register and annual reports for about 20 years.
Non-academic interests include mountain recreation, cycling, the life and works of John Keats, and effective parenting – he lives with his wife Patricia and is father of 3 children, grandfather to four.
