Dr. Caughey is a Senior Investigator and Chief of the TSE/Prion Biochemistry Section of the Laboratory of Neurological Infections and Immunity, Rocky Mountain Laboratories (RML) in Hamilton, Montana. RML is part of the National Institute of Allergy & Infectious Diseases (NIAID), National Institutes of Health.
Dr Caughey has been on the editorial boards of several journals. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology and has served, or is serving, on the scientific advisory boards of agencies that fund or perform TSE/prion disease research.
Dr. Caughey’s current research efforts are focused primarily on i) determining the structure and propagation mechanism of prions, ii) improving diagnostic testing for prion diseases, iii) developing effective therapeutics for prion diseases and iv) understanding how prions can be inactivated.
